Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) has registered the first offence against non-compliance, almost a month after asking pet owners to possess mandatory pet licences.
Acting on the instructions from CSMC chief G Shreekant, an offence was registered against the pet owner from the Renuka Mata Mandir area on September 21.
“The civic body chief was inspecting the status of encroachment on a stretch from Harsul T-Point to CIDCO bus stand area when a dog of a foreign breed was found causing public nuisance near the Jadhavwadi area. The dog was not chained and causing trouble to people passing by,” a statement by CSMC said.
The pet owner tried to pressurise the civic authorities when they asked for a pet licence. “The owner did not have a valid pet licence and the dog was endangering public safety. An offence has been registered with the CIDCO police station,” A civic authority said.
Animal rights activist, Berryl Sanchis of the advocacy group APLA said many pet owners having foreign breeds do not possess the valid licences. “The civic authorities must launch an all-out drive against such pet owners. Such an action is the need of the hour as it will bring on record the population of foreign breed dogs,” she said.
The CSMC last month made pet licenses mandatory and appealed to pet owners to visit its dog unit at Baijipura with the necessary documents.
The local civic body has fixed Rs 750 as charges for issuing the desired licence.
The licence will help pet owners in following the vaccination schedule and track missing pets with the help of the registration number put around the neck of animals among other benefits, an official said.
